Important Information – Season Cancelled

The KSAC committee met this afternoon and has made the decision to cancel the remainder of the
2019-20 season as a preventative measure relating to the current spread of the COVID-19 virus. This
includes the cancellation of the club championships and presentation day.

This decision has been made based on what we currently know about COVID-19 and also the
uncertainty that Australia faces over the coming weeks and months.

We are very disappointed that this has so unceremoniously spelt the end to our season without the
club championships, but it is for the best and is in the interest of not only the health and safety of
our members but also our greater community.

The next couple of weeks is a critical time for us all to practice social distancing to flatten the COVID-
19 infection curve and allow the health services to cope. Everyone plays a role as individuals and the
club has a social responsibility to do the right thing by our community at a larger scale.
Some key points include:

  • We have no control over how many members attend our meets. Although unlikely, if our
full membership were to attend with parents/guardians we would exceed 500 people on
the ground and therefore exceed the government restrictions on large gatherings.
  • Regardless of the 500 figure we are still a large group which draws on a significant
geographical area. Our club has the potential to impact upon up to a dozen school, 100’s of
families and businesses if we have a confirmed case attend. This would include people who
work in the health services (who are in a critical role at this time) and most importantly
those who are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill if they are infected with the virus.
  • While not a contact sport the operation of the club has way too many touch points to
manage effectively. These include but are not limited to handling of throwing implements,
children standing in lines together, carrying of drink bottles, handling of finish line place
tokens and our finish line volunteers processing results in close proximity to every athlete.
While mitigation measures could be implemented the exposure would remain significant.

There will be further correspondence regarding the close out of the season, including arrangements
for the collection of season participation and point score awards.

We thank everyone for a wonderful season, and trust you understand the decision we have made.
